Chapter 4

“We talked about it and we decided to go for a vacation together,” Ross said (putting stress on WE) to both of their parents the next time they were all together for the traditional family dinner.

He and Emma had spoken and decided that a vacation might be a good idea after all. Neither of them was going to admit it, but the thought of having to make such a big decision was scaring them both. So, Ross arranged for his assistant to do his job, while Emma prepared her suitcases.

They planned on going somewhere hot and sunny, somewhere they could actually forget about everyone else and their own problems. San Juan seemed as good destination as any and they agreed to do all that was in their power to have an excellent time together.

“I am so glad you two made this decision...” Thomas started saying, but his son interrupted him.

“Don’t be in such a hurry, dad,” Ross said sarcastically. “We are going away to actually get away from you. And all that crap about us getting to know each other and finding out if we can build a family together – that we are going to leave to you.”

“I don’t like your tone, Ross,” Thomas said seriously. “All we want is for you to be happy and give to our grandchild a happy home to grow into.”

“It wasn’t our decision for you to get involved,” Evelyn added. “But, we will support you in whatever you decide.”

“Thank you, mom,” Emma spoke for the first time. “We all want the same thing, but we also know that relationships doesn't always work out the way we want them to.”

“I am sure that your relationship with Ross has a future, Emma,” Thomas turned towards her. “I have never seen my son change his life for a woman, but he did it for you.”

“Dad!” Ross cried out his dismay.

“What, isn’t that true?”

“Okay, okay...” Evelyn thought it wise to interrupt them. “Where do you plan to go?”

The change of subject was welcomed by all and even Thomas had to admit that that wasn’t the right time to embarrass his son. Their plans for San Juan were received with joy and Thomas and Evelyn offered to take them to the airport on Monday morning.

The preparation for the trip tired Emma, but the feeling of excitement was strong enough to make her forget all difficulties. She loved travelling and travelling with Ross was going to be even better. Monday morning they said their goodbyes to Evelyn and Thomas and climbed the small, luxury plane that belonged to the family.

The long fly, they spent talking and discussing what they were going to do in the big exotic city. Emma took the opportunity to steal some sleep and woke up with her head lying on Ross’ lap. Surprisingly, that didn’t make her feel uneasy and they continued the fly in comfortable conversation.

In San Juan they were staying in the penthouse of the biggest hotel there. Emma felt a little uneasy at seeing all the luxe offered to them in there, but Ross assured her that this was nothing.
